I would say these three are the saddest to me because they are based on reality, and there is no way to resolve the way they ended!

1.) Frances starring Jessica Lang. It was so sad to see the end where she is lobotomized all because she didn't want to be a "Star"

2.) Julia starring Vanessa Redgrave and Jane Fonda, where IS that little girl?????

3.) Schindler's List. Though many would acclaim him as a hero, the enormity of the tragedy he could NOT prevent really DID matter to him. The scene where he weeps and weeps to the Jewish prisoners he HAD saved "I should have done MORE! I SHOULD HAVE DONE MORE!!!!' really affects me! In so many ways he COULDN'T have done more, felt that he should of and THAT is the tragedy of it all! So Sad.....

I'm going to interpret 'sad' as meaning the ending made me cry... No necessarily because it was a bad ending....

An Affair to Remember
Gone with the Wind
The Color Purple
Project X
The Piano
Baz Luhrmann's stuff. Well, Romeo & Juliet, & Moulin Rouge
Lonesome Dove

You should watch it! its the first thing that comes to mind when i think of GOOD movie SAD ending, cause most movies have sad parts but usually semi-happy endings. this one has more of a shocking/upsetting ending.

If you're willing to watch foreign films, then FireWorks and Dolls (both directed by Kitano) are great choices. The Elephant Man has to rank near the top of any list.

There's never been a sadder movie than
"The Sweet Hereafter".

The end of "Glory" is a field of dead bodies. Everybody dies.

"Before the Rain"

"Joe"

Franco Zefferelli's "Romeo & Juliet"

"House of Sand & Fog"

These all left me in tears.
