what is the difference between being emo and being goth?

So much different from when I was in school...but Goth was about dark, creepy stuff like vampires and wearing all black with white face make-up and black lipstick/eye make-up/nail polish, etc.

Emo seems to have stemmed from that with wearing black but more to show a constant state of mourning for their lost youth. Goth tend to wear clothes that stand out more while Emo's just want to blend in to the background. They wear some of the same make-up stuff but not the white base.

Both say they want to express their individuality and just be left alone, but both are obvious cries to fit in and be noticed.

Goth is very different from emo.Emo people let their emotions win in the battle between right and wrong, and allow depressive personalities to control their choices. They hurt themselves and make excuses for it, like "physical pain makes emotional pain go away." Even though their emotional pain may be real, it is melodramatic in intensity, and mostly for show.
Goth on the other hand is an evolving style. Once it was more about dressing and behaving in the medieval style of the Goths who were originally a people of the 4th to 9th centuries. Now it is more of a compilation of fashion, music, art, and architecture. Although there is little variation in color of clothes (mostly black) there are dramatic differences in style. While Emo's wear their emotions on their sleeve, Goth's tend to be more private with their emotions, preferring instead to display their emotions artistically.

Emo kids cut them self and like to kiss each other because they think it's manly or something. Gothic people just wear dark clothes and either are or act depressed all the time.
