One half of all our nerve cells are located within the stomach... We kinda have 2 brains; when one gets upset, the other does too.
It turns out that both our gut and our brain originate early in embryogenesis from the same clump of tissue which divides during fetal development. While one section turns into the central nervous system, another piece migrates to become the enteric nervous system. Later the two nervous systems connect via a cable called the vagus nerve -- the longest of all the cranial nerves whose name is derived from Latin, meaning "wandering." The vagus nerve meanders from the brain stem through the neck and finally ends up in the abdomen. There's the brain-gut connection.

Butterflies in stomach = you are ready to do something, the body(autonomous nervous system) is preparing for either fighting or flighting but can yet do it.
For instance when meeting someone you like - the body is getting prepared for doing something or fleeing, but it is hasitating cause it does not know which it wants to do. Also the same for if you have butterflies in your stomach before an important presentation - then you also are like eager to do something and you have to keep the energy for fighting or fleeing or anything...
So butterflies are actually some kind of unrelased energy/action flying around in your guts until you do something about it:D

Good question.
It's a response from our brain in certain situations. But why it goes to the stomach is beyond me.
People would say that it's just an expression for when you're "in love". I guess there aren't many people who did feel the "butterflies".

Of course butterflies don't get in your stomach, but people say that when they're really nervous.

it's when we get nervous it feels like butterflies and it is our chemicals getting ready for the flight or fight response. If we sense danger or w/e it's just a way our body prepares.

Well it feels like we have butterflies in our stomachs because of their "fluttering" and you get that tingly feeling. It's probably either A. you're nervous or B. you're *in love* =)
