thats the disk drive I have in my computer, and when you click on properties it says, Device type: DVD/CD-ROM drives. But I can't get the Sims LIfe Stories DVD-ROM to work on my computer.

Bummer, this drive will not play or write a DVD

I just bought a DVD-RW for $40 at best buy.....or you can try wal mart.....They are getting pretty cheap....

You must use a DVD-ROM drive. There are numurous technical reasons, mainly that while DVD and CD use the same type of carrier (5" disc form), DVDs use a different type of material in the read/write layers, requiring a different wavelength of laser light than CD-ROM and the format is far different.

Bottom line DVD will by design/default read CD and DVD formats but not the other way around. To read the most formats use DVD-ROM. DVD will likewise not read the new Blu-ray and HD-DVD formats as they are exponentially different also, but you might not encounter those for a while on a PC.

When your computer classifies it's drives, Windows lumps the two together because the drives are similar enough that it has a common driver for them. It doesn't have anything to do with playing either, only operating the drives.
