I know what features I need, like processor, memory, etc. I'm looking for your comments on the different brands. Any experiences you'd like to share would be helpful. Thanks.

I have used a mac before, so I'm aware of the differences. Are any of you concerned about the criticisms Vista has been getting?

Mac's i have no experience in, however from what i understand the newer macs can also run most if not all windows programs so that is intriguing.

Dell is overpriced and not generally considered a leader in the notebook market

HP more than a lot of companies try to cut corners and buy cheap parts to save money and so they are not as reliable. Their tech support is decent but I owned an HP laptop and had to send it back to the manufacturer due to hardware failure twice in the first year and it ended up getting fried due to a poorly designed power cable.

In short, I know little about Macs but if I were choosing something besides a Mac, You should really go with a Toshiba. You will typically pay a little more than some brands (not more than Dell though) but the added $100-200 will be well worth it because they use much higher quality parts than many of the more "budget" companies, and they have excellent tech support. I have owned my current Toshiba laptop for nearly 2 years and have had very few problems with it.

To answer your appended comment, I believe Vista appears to be a good OS with a strong backbone. the driver support is not there at the current time, but that will not take too long I'm sure...

HP Laptops are only a little bit more reliable than their printers--which arent' very reliable. You can make one work, however, DO clean all the pre-installed crap off your HP laptop before using it.

I know many high tech companies that turn to Dell for their computer solutions. If you get a good dell, and you take care of it and aren't an idiot, you'll likely be fine.

There isn't as much software for a Mac as there is for a PC. If you're easily amused by colorful candy shells then go right ahead, but I'd advise you to not waste your money on something as superficial as a mac. If you do, don't complain because you can't use as much software.

i have the Dell inspiron 1705 which is that same thing you're looking into just with a larger screen. i haven't had much of any problems with the computer itself, but i would rather have a macbook. So go with a mac, but everyone has their own problems with different sorts of computers, what i mean is don't just discount the reliabilty of one brand because a few people have had some problems, you will find a computer that works for you.

Don't go with a Dell, we had one of their laptops and it ran horribly. Right now i have a HP laptop and it is ok, but it would turn off and not turn back on. I've had it for three years and had to send it back to the manufacturer three times, and it runs a bit hot and slow. As for a Macbook that's the laptop i'm saving up to buy right now, it sounds great and i can't wait to get it.

i'm having fairly of the comparable concern. i might flow with an Macbook not the rest the Dell Inspiron isn't that undesirable yet for what your finding for i prefer to propose the Macbook professional 13' its the wide-unfold ultimate one for value and how it works. yet you will possibly desire to flow verify out apple's internet site they'll instruct you extra yet defiantly flow with a mac.

I go with an HP computer. Dell computer suck, as does their tech support. HP computer are awesome, I've owned two HP computers. We have one Dell, but haven't been happy with it. And I've talked to a lot of people who have regretted ever buying a Dell.

Oh and don't forget to order your recovery CD's with it. Always something good to have, just in case. If you don;t order them, then you will have to create them yourself with a program on the computer.

As for a Mac, that's up to. I have tried to use a Mac before but found it difficult to use.

My personal preference is the MacBook. Another butter-like product from Apple. Smooth and creamy. If you want it for websurfing, music, movies, word processing, spreadsheets, video chat.......the MacBook kicks butt on everything else out there. If you want it just for games, the Wintel Woofbook might be better.

I'm using an HP and I don't advise you to buy one. It's a little over 3 years old and is already showing a LOT of age for using it for only internet, email, and MSWord!
