Since I don't know your characters, my suggestion is to either make the parents reflect your character, and so have an influence on the character's personality; or make them the opposite of your character to create conflict. So does your character follow in his/her parent's footsteps and they have jobs the character admires, or do they do something the character is repulsed by, and must distance him/herself from?

The Father could be an Architect. There are a lot of story lines that could go with that profession.
The mother could be a 911 Operator. Imagine what could happen!!!
