The whole, "the number of people alive now is equal to the amount of people who have ever lived" is a load of BS.

"Estimates of the number of human beings who have ever lived on Earth constitute an extremely large range, with low estimates around 45 billion, and the highest estimates topping out around 125 billion. Many of the more robust estimates fall into the range of 90 to 110 billion humans."
The current world population is 6,500,000,000 (estimate)

So I guess to work out how many people have died since the dawn of humanity is minus the current world population from the estimate of how many people have ever lived...

45 billion - 6.5 billion = 38.5 billion
125 billion - 6.5 billion = 118.5 billion

so it's a number between 38.5 billion & 118.5 billion.

In the preface to "2001: A Space Odyssey", the science author Arthur C. Clarke wrote "Since the dawn of time, roughly a hundred billion human beings have walked the planet Earth."

He has also expressed this at various times as "Behind every man living there stand X ghosts", but X is different depending on when he actually said it - 40, and later on 30. Today, it would have to be 20 or a little less.

According to 2002 data:
The number who have ever been born is 106,456,000,000
The world population in mid-2002 was 6,215,000,000
The percentage of those ever born who were living in 2002 was 5.8%

So those who had died already by then = 94.2% :-)
