When I was 6 I hugged a tree (don't ask me why, i was 6!)
was i a treehugger? Im serious the term doesnt make sense.

Spades almost got it completely right! He missed the part about flower children hugging trees to get closer to nature (literally) by hugging a tree to absorb the good vibes coming from the dryad within!

Not that I ever did that '-)

When the loggers came to cut down the trees the hippies would chain them selfs to them and the "treehugger" word just grew from there...to show great compassion for trees.

i'm a tree hugger! and i think that term came from the hippies but it basically means u like trees and to not kill nature

It comes from hippies. They are against falling trees, and yet they live in houses made of wood. They also drive spikes into trees so that when they are loged they damage saws. Some have killed loggers
