Pharmaceutical Companies are in the business of making money, this is true. However, they cannot make money if their drugs do not work. I am a sufferer of several mental health diseases including Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, Bipolar Disorder, and anxiety/panic disorder. I have never been prescribed lithium. But I now take about 7 different medications a day. I can fairly well function in today's world. I have my good days, my bad days, and my so-so days. Without medication I would not be able to type this answer. My last job was my own Computer Consulting Business. I was making good money and enjoying what I was doing. Then one day I sat down in front of a computer and could not remember how to turn it on, let alone fix it. My business went bust. I went bankrupt and lost my house. With the help and love of my wife and the Veterans Administration Hospital I have medications and group therapy. I have stayed retired, but for the most part I have enjoyed the last 10 years. Do what you believe is right for you. I believe in the doctors, medications, and therapies. Good luck to you.

Social anxiety can cause these feelings, which can also lead to severe depression,
http://www.socialanxietyinstitute.org/ds...

if not you could be suffering from Generalized Anxiety
Disorder..http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/general_anx...

There is hope; I've been there, and still am there, it is a long, hard struggle. I recommend
Cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/cognitive_b... worked best for me, with mild anti-anxiety meds. I suffered from social anxiety for over 15 years. I've tried individual therapy, and group therapy and studied psychology for 10 years, as a profession, but also with the hope to cure myself.

Depending on your comfort level, you could go to a psychologist that practices CBT and specializes in anxiety disorders, seek a group therapy, or create one. Usually those that do attend the group therapy are a bit more high functioning because as you know, it can be difficult to speak in a group.

Another idea is to see if there are any local research studies being conducted that you could participate in.

The program that finally worked the best for me is this one: http://www.socialanxiety.us/findinghelp.... and I was lucky enough to have a structured behavioral group to go along with it. Sometimes the people that actually attend this program come back home and form groups.

I recommend a mild anti-anxiety med in addition to CBT therapy.

Any questions, let me know ... I can't tell you how much this has improved my life!

The best is a chinese herb He Huan Hua, also called Albizzia floss (mimosa flowers). You make a tea with a small amount. Kava Kava is good. Also pasionflower or skullcap. Skullcap will also ease addiction withdrawals. Passionflower & skullcap both aid sleep. As with all these herbs, too much can be dangerous so use in small amounts.

St John's Wort is supposed to help for mild depression or anxiety. But for something major it would probably be better to see a doctor
