it's right over the vagina entrance. If you can stick two fingers up there, and it doesn't hurt or stretch, it's broken.

women's hymens can be different on different women. But for the most part it is on the external sex organs (the vulva), so it is not a question of how far up. it is at the opening of the vagina. at conception, females do not have an opening to the vagina. during gestation this skin that covers the vaginal opening divides to form the opening. this extra flap of skin is what forms the hymen. some women might not even have one at all because the tissue that divides to form the opening, may have completely divided in uterine.
It is hard to tell if the hymen is broken. some women may have a hymen that is elastic enough to allow entry without tearing. and not only sex can tear this. the hymen can perforate from strenuous physical activity (sports), using tampons and masturbation. So many women have already torn their hymen long before the act of intercourse. It is not always painful and does not always bleed, so many women do not even know that it has torn. And, even after torn, most women will have remnants of their hymen until they deliver a child vaginally.
just a little tid-bit: The hymen is named after the Greek God Hymenaeus - the God of marriage and weddings

Its at the very opening, its simply the skin that surronds the vaginal opening and as women have intercourse it stretches out. It doesnt necessarily break rather than get torn when its abruptly stretched - and you'd definitely know from the pain that it'd happened in that way. If its been slowly stretched over the years from whatever activities you may have done you would know by how large it looks, but you may want to find some womens books to see diagrams of stretched versus non stretched sizes.

Farther than your finger and you'll bleed a little or a lot. I think your dr. can tell you if it's still intact. Some people swear you can tear it by riding a horse or a bike. I did both and that wasnt the case. Who knows maybe that can happen. I doubt it. Good luck.

i do not know exactly, but i do know this - it can be broken by things other than sex, i.e. sports and having it broken does not mean anything except that something has caused it to break

I dont believe it's too far up, and if it's broken you probably would be able to insert a tampon comfortably, or you may remember bleeding at some time, and it wasn' t your period.....
