my nephew wants to know the story of the smoky mountains and "falling rock". i remember hearing the story as a kid, but i cant remember how it went. i know it had to do with falling rock and geronimo, and i'm trying to find the story of the legend online. does anyone know where i can find it??

My father told me this story many times traveling through W.Va. where we are from. He told it so I would not be afraid.
This is the story I was told.
Falling Rock was the daughter of Geronimo, a beautiful Indian Princess. She fell in love with a "white" man and Geronimo became furious and forbid her to see him any more. Falling Rock was devastated having to choose between her powerful father and the love of her life so she ran off, away from both. Geronimo could not bare the pain...he wanted his beautiful daughter back so he posted signs throughout the mountains...."Watch Out For Falling Rock." I know this now to be a "mountain tale" but believed it throughout my childhood. Hope this helps....Alda

I remember it as a joke rather than a legend. Something like an Indian named Falling Rock went into the mountains to hunt, became lost and never returned to his tribe. So that's why to this day as you drive through the mountains you see signs along the road which say " Watch For Falling Rock".
