This is not a question about Bush! This has nothing to do with the stupid Democrat/Republican debate. Both parties have contributed to the outrageous size of our federal government

The U.S. government has the primary purpose of preserving freedom. According to the Constitution, however, I think we did authorize it to run the post office, but I'd argue that was a mistake. So, retirement accounts, education and so forth can only dig us deeper into the same pit. I've had enough of big government. Let's go back to the small government that our system was designed for. Big government only works when there's a dictatorship. Small government works in a democracy.

This is a democracy, so it's up to the people to decide what the function of government is. If the majority wants government to get involved in education and health, then that's legitimate, end of story.

Yes. The government must provide health, education, essential services, the wellbeing of its citizens, protection from foreign threats, and the rule of law. Protecting liberty is not the main function of government; plenty of governments don't do this at all.

well... I guess it depends on what you call "legitimate" and if you're a liberal or conservative...

but, I look back to times like the great depression when many suffered... and when many of these programs were put into place...

what is the government's role? to let thousands die if it can save them? to what degree does/should government have ethics or morality?

many would say dead men don't value their liberty... and stupid ones probably don't either...

has there ever been a successful private education system on a national level? I don't know of one?
