Sorry if this question seems stupid but I'm only in Middle school, and just wondering.

I believe they're extinct inactive volcanoes.

there can be volcanoes on mars because they are ancient. mars never had plate tectonics which is why its volcanoes are so big, and mars is a smaller planet so its interior cooled off quicker than earth's did. it still might be hot deep inside but that would be too far for any magma to get up to the surface anymore.

The interior was not always cool. The volcanoes are not active

The interior was once like Earth's, and it's landscape behaved like Earth's did in it's early days. Now, it has cooled, and all tectonic and volcanic activity has ceased.
