No need to get all crazy here with a tiller and what not. Common tools my man. Dig about 8" to a foot, ammend the soil with chicken or steer manure, toss it over and over with a shovel, when yer satisfied its mixed well enough, perfect, level it off and voila. I've done roughly the same thing to my veggie gardens for years. Have fun... .

I have an easier way - raised garden.

You can build up the amended soil to the height you need it and use wood or bricks to hold in the soil.

This helps the backbreaking bending over too.

I built mine over my garden sprinkler so It automatically waters it. It's the easiest I have ever done.

Just a thought.

Don't worry about it too much. All you need to do is take a shovel and push down on it(in the garden) and flip it over! Easy as pie.

FWIW

A nantes corless carrot needs 16"

A heirloom tomato needs 36"

A habanero pepper needs 48"
