I live on a small island so our library is a vital part of the community. Over 75% of the people on our island have a library card!

On any given night there are groups meeting there that share al sorts of common interests -- quilting, writing, poetry, history, farming, chess, the list seems endless.

For me our library is some much more than bricks and books as they say. It's a gathering place, social venue, resource, meeting hall and an educational setting.

I'm guessing I spend almost two hours a week there for one reason or another.

My personal library is a room lined with bookshelves. I sit in there to read my favorites while the sun shines in the window.
The public library that I use opens to me a wealth of different writers to sample plus new books on any hobby or interest that I suddenly fancy. It makes me rich to have such a resource for free. I could never afford to buy all the books I borrow to read.

Originally it just meant free books (as long as they weren't overdue). It became a place to do homework with friends, borrow movies and read magazines. People who can't afford computers (or could use a second one) can use one for free. Our library has a preschool 3 days a week so that parents can look for books in peace. We have book discussion groups, books for babies and toddlers, craft groups and things for children to do on any holiday including early dismissal days. We have a mental health centre that shares our building and an employment resource centre. All of our staff is willing to help no matter what your problem is.

A library is more than just stored information, reference materials and entertainment. It houses stories from every corner of the world and some out of it. It speaks in a multitude of languages and gives the printed opinions of millions of individuals. As well as our eyes, it informs and entertains our ears through recordings of music from all genres and provides thrilling narration via audiobooks. It is a keeper of the past, present and the future. It offers fact and fiction. It is a gateway to the world without travel.

My library means new adventures to out of this world and enchanting places. It is also a place where I have met friends who have thought me a lot on how to face life's struggles. It is also a place of solace and entertainment everytime I'm in need of comfort and relaxation.

When I was young I had to visit a weird Gothic building on 100th Street/Broadway in NYC. I thought it was a temple. That was in the 50's. Being an adventurer, I had to go see that temple and I was shocked -- it was an old place where there were thousand books and I found Heaven.

For 2 years I lived in a small room. I got rid of my bed so I had room for my bookshelves. I slept on the floor in a sleeping bag.
