it was invented by a coach around 1880 to keep the athletes at the YMCA fit during the winter season. At first it consisted of to fruit baskets, and no dribbling was yet invented only passing and shooting.

Naismith worked for the YMCA in Springfield, Massachusetts. Naismith was asked to make a game that would not take up much room, was not too rough, and at the same time, could be played indoors. He had no idea he would invent what would become the most popular indoor sport in the U.S. So, with a peach basket nailed to either end of the school's gymnasium, and two teams of nine players, a ball and 13 rules, the game began to entertain and keep the kids active.

So colored people could kick our butts big time!!! LOL. No I think it was just to have some fun, we all need a hobby. Someone probably didn't like how someone was doing something so they did things their own way. Then their was Basketball. Who knows?? It is just something to do.
