What hardware and software will he need to start up the computer to an Xp?

A full, legal copy of Windows XP and any size hard drive will be enough. Just make sure the computer has at least a 300 MHz processor and 256MB of RAM.I recommend 512MB of RAM or more, and at least an 80GB hard drive.

to clarify a bit on the previous responses... You will need an actual OS install disk. You have to be aware of the HD Buss in the computer. Many older computers have ATA-6 buss, which will limit you to 128 Gig or smaller drives. Also good to know the buss anyway so you don't go out & buy a SCSI drive for a SATA connection. Find out what connection type you have, whether or not you need mounting hardware and do a search on:

Another HD and an operating system disk. That's it! Full version of XP and any sized drive (the bigger the better). You can get both reasonably cheap nowadays. Windows will install many drivers for the system but you may have to visit individual vendor sites to download mobo, video or sound drivers.

Your friend's benefactor was smart. That's exactly what I intend to do when I dump my PC.
You will have to buy a hard drive (they are not too expensive) and buy WindowsXP and install it.
