at a recent job interview, i was asked my opinion of "worker burn out." i responded that i think it is mostly an individual thing, that people need to believe in somethiing, to find some meaning in their work whether it is religion or humanism and to have something to fall back on, whether it be family or friends. do u agree or disagree?

The response was good, but it's a lot more than that and somewhat complicated.

Worker burn out is serious and acute “bad” stress overload. (Bad stress is that stress that one can do nothing about) There are several causes of this type of stress including, but not limited to, a poor work environment, micro-management, co-worker conflicts, ongoing work load that can never be accomplished in the time allotted, poor health, (including other loved ones) excessive use of drugs or alcohol, bad home environment, excessive debt, and a million other things. Individually, the above reasons can normally be handled without too much of a problem. It is when they come at one in multiples they can cause potential damage. A good supervisor or GM can detect problems before they become a crisis, but if not identified and resolved; the potential for physical harm and mental breakdown is extreme; i.e., “Going Postal”, Suicide, Domestic Violence, DWI-etc. Anyone that displays symptoms of anger or emotional outbursts for no apparent reason should be reported immediately for evaluation.

I don't think that the interviewer was looking for the answer that you gave. You removed yourself from the situation by stating "people". this can be off putting to an interviewer who is looking to see if you personally have normal responses without manufacturing answers.
An interviewer is usually looking for staff who are grounded, rather than the humanism bit.that wants to save the world.
Martyrs often burn out due to poor communication skills, not because they are overworked. If this appears a bit brutal, I'm sorry, however it's a competitive world out there, and you want to be in the race. Good Luck.

I agree 100%.

A person can't throw him or herself into work and nothing but. There has to be something else going on in the person's life to keep him/her from getting overloaded with work-related stress.

You need to have other activities outside of work to enjoy and be involved in.
