Why not!

Definitely, if you are not related. Even then the matter of first and second cousins varies from place to place in the lower 48, and I assume in Canada. With already having the same last name there would be no hassle over who changes there name or struggling with hyphenated names—maybe it should be encouraged. Aye?.

No, I'm fairly sure it's illegal. The reason of course being that two people having the same last name are obviously related, and in Canada, incest is seen as a crime. It's also scientifically verified that children of incestuous couples tend to have deformed or mentally retarded children.

There's also a strong male-centered tradition in which all women must change their surname to their new husband's. It makes men feel very powerful, and to rob your husband of that is a crime beyond reason.

Of course those are all lies. What are you thinking? Canada is more free than the U.S., you know?

It is not illegal. Not everyone with the same last name is related. For example in the States many immigrants and slaves took or were given last names that related to their professions...for example "Smith" for blacksmith...etc, or took easier to pronounce and remember names such as my family-originally from Poland.

Do you really think all the "Smiths" of the world are related???
