Why is empowerment becoming increasingly important for successful organizations?

Because if all decisions have to be made at the top level, you end up with a huge bottleneck. Empowering employees means pushing responsibility (and accountability) for decisions down to the appropriate level - so a line operator can stop the assembly line right away if parts being produced are out of spec. By the time a manager gets there to stop the line, 50,000 bad widgets are already out the door.
