The conventional definition of insanity is anything the does not conform to what is considered normal behavior.

If you consider normal behavior sane, you have my sympathy.

Love and blessings Don

I am inclined to say no because basically ever person who has ever been defined as clinically insane by a doctor or institution has claimed furtively that he or she is most certainly not insane even though the doctors have ascertained beyond the shadow of a doubt that that person is insane. This does however create a new problem if we cannot know we are insane we also then have no way of knowing whether everyone is sane or not. If we cannot know if we are insane then maybe everyone in the world is insane but since we cannot know it we say we are not and its just a matter of the people who are "more" sane calling those who are "less" sane insane. Fascinating really!!!!!!

Being insane or being sane.... Its a matter of perception and opinion.

We now know the world is not flat!!! Saying it wasn't during the time most believed it to be, in certain areas meant certain death.

Those that believed it was, were they insane??? NO.

The same holds true now for every aspect of life including insanity.

Yes, it is possible for one to know they are insane.... if that persons belief follows others perceptions of what that means.

What is insane? I know lots of people who seem perfectly sane, but I think they are nuts.

But to answer your question, perhaps, as the most "out there" do have moments of lucidity, or someone could diagnose them....and tell them.

Taking a class on this exact subject right now, woo hoo! :)

If you were insane, you would not know it. To even question it is a sign of sanity. The insane are too far gone to realize it. Their delusional realm is so real that they do not even question it, even though others do not share their reality.

The insane don't know they're insane. They are doing what would be accepted as sane, if we all saw what they saw. I mean, if there were a million squirrels chasing after you, you'd hide from them too, right?

It requires a certain degree of self-awareness. Clinical insanity does not completely wipe out a person's self awareness, especially, at its early stages of development, Yet, most such people would deny that anything is wrong with them, even though they might know it.

What if you are not insane but think you are? Does that make you insane?

Not necessarily. You might believe that your thoughts are the right ones and that the world is wrong. Some people are actually aware though that they are having break downs or mental problems and seek help to overcome those difficulties.

Yes. You would know that your actions and responses are not normal. Must be pretty scary. A person like this should not trust himself any longer. Put yourself in the hands of a good doctor.
