sound is transmitted by one particle vibrating and knocking against the next one, and so on. So air particles araanged in waves vibrate and transmit sound. It follows that if there are no particles (a vacuum) sound will not be transmitted through a vacuum. It also follows that a dense medium will transmit sound faster: water transmits sound faster then air and concrete even faster, but because of the density of these media the sound dies out more quickly: so sound goes a long way slowly thorugh air and a shorter way but fastyer through water.

The amplitude of sound depends on a bunch of factors, one of which is the medium through which it passes.

It's amplitude may become compressed (narrower) or decompressed (wider). They are generally wider in gas or air, less so in liquid, and much narrower in solids.

The more dense the medium the faster the sound.
