I work about 75 hrs a week, and try to have a life in between. I normally get 5hrs of sleep every night. Besides fatigue and drowsiness, which I have now, what harmful side-effects, so to speak, are caused by not getting enough rest/sleep?

You need 8 hours of sleep each night to allow your body to go into REM sleep. If you don't get this, your body does not rejuvenate your adrenal glands. This is what causes all the problems with being dizzy when you stand up quickly, looking older, and reducing your ability to concentrate and work efficiently.

There are too many harmful effects of not enough sleep to list here or discuss here. You can find a vast source of articles on the subject. To quote from the Washington Post article below "lack of sleep disrupts every physiologic function in the body". Just a few below. I recommend searching Dr. Mercola's website for more of his articles.

I don't know how old you are but as you will grow older many things will be affected by your lack of sleep. I hear one of the causes of depression and fibromyalgia is from years of lack of sleep as well as other auto immune diseases. Even people that don't feel fatigued with lack of sleep and think they are doing well over time will not do well.

You are likely to suffer a weakened immune system when you burn the candle at both ends. You should get at least 7 hours of uninterrupted sleep per night. At least take a multi-vitamin. And do take care.

Short term memory loss, irratibility which leads to loss of friends,, premature aging, the list is quite long. Its a fast paced world that has changed dramatically, but unfortunately we have not evolved to where our bodies can funtion properly with less than eight hours of uninterupted sleep.
