Unfortunately there is no way to stop a hurricane. I have lived in the Orlando area for close to 10years and we have experienced our share (back in 2004 they came every other week for about a month) but the more inland you live the less likely you are to get them.

I have lived in Florida my entire life. Orlando & Sarasota areas are two of the worst down in Florida, with Miami/Keys and the Panhandle being right at the top. Jacksonville sees quite a bit itself, but no as bad as these other areas. If you are plaining to move to Florida or just go on vacation during hurricane season then I suggest you stay somewhere around or above Gainesville. That way when a hurricane does come (theres no IFs they're gonna come) then you won't as far to drive to get out of its way, like going to Georgia or Alabama. If you lived below Gainesville and everyone was seeing that a "Major" hurricane was about to make land fall then you would be stuck in traffic for hours and hours.

We lived in South Beach when Hurricane Ivan went thru Alabama, Georgia, and came back around into Florida. It's just a little over 2 1/2 hours from South Beach to Orlando. It took us nearly 6 hours to get there.

Well for almost 15 years, I was certain that the Orlando/Kissimmee area was safe from hurricanes. Then 2004 came and my home was destroyed by the three hurricanes that came. Since Florida is covered on both sides with water, there is not a spot in Florida that one can say is safe from a hurricane.

I live in Bradenton, above Sarasota. No where along the coast is immune to hurricanes. They also follow no pattern. We have braced for hurricanes here and watched them travel another direction, leaving us on the back side, and hit Orlando harder. If you want to live in Florida, you deal with the possibility of being hit -- at least that's what your home owner's insurance will tell you.

There is no place in Florida that is safe from hurricanes. There is nowhere in Florida that you can be far enough away from the ocean that a hurricane can't hit. Orlando is probably the safest major city in Florida.

first - please listen to the posters about orlando - it DOES get urricanes and yes in 04 it was a HARD season for them.
unfortunately depending on the path ofthe hurricane -- it can hit anywhere in florida. the inland ara like gainesville and tallahassee won't generally suffer a direct hit but can get hit hard - it's just not generally as likely. 2004 in orlando was a little bit of a fluke. i livein jacksonville florida and we have had more of the tornados from the outer bands. our last direct hit was in '68 or around there. no matter what - i would still live here. think about it.... tornado's hit, ice storms & snow storms hit.... at least, in florida, while it's not "fun" to be without power in the summer - it's better then not having power during an ice storm ; )

Sarasota does get hurricanes yes, they are on the beach. Orlando is about 1 1/2 hours away from the beach and so therefore doesn't get hurricanes, they don't come onto land that far. However if a hurricane is off the coast there then Orlando can get bad weather from the hurricane (the outskirts of the hurricane if you will), is the best I can describe it. Anywhere on the beaches of Florida, can and will get hurricanes.

There is no part of florida exempt from hurricanes. Lived here for most of my life and trust me there is no place exempt. Not inland or the coast.Inland may not get hit as hard but then again you can'nt call it.Hurrican jean and francis did just as much damage inland as they did on the coast trust me i went through both of them.
