I'm trying to set up my wireless connection but it seems to keep dropping the connection - only if I stop clicking / surfing to read a page. If I linger more than about 30 sec's on a page the connection drops. Helplines are useless - using BT home hub.

Please help!!!

Hello,

(ANS) My diagnosis would be the problem here sounds like signal strength. That is the signal strength between the wifi card in your computer & the wifi router.

NOTE: just like a mobile phone signal when you want to call someone, a WiFi network card has to talk to your router, it has to find & establish a good quality (strong, stable) signal in order for the connection to work well. If the signal strength is poor the connection can & will falter and fail i.e. be dropped or lost.

**House walls in older buildings can be a source of problems if they are thick, or if the router is located a long way from computer.

**Radio frequency interference can also be another source of problems for wifi connections. Interference can come from localised electronic equipement such as TV's, Microwave ovens, street lighting, central heating pumps & timers, passing taxi's that use local radio, low flying aircraft if your under a flight path.

**Other people localy who also have & use wifi internet connections, i.e. cross signal interference.

**Make sure your signal & router is correctly secured, make sure you are using WEP (wireless equivalent privacy) or one of the other security features such as IPSEC to secure your router & home network, connection. Otherwise its like leaving your front door unlocked & flapping in the breeze. This is an open invitation to any passing hacker (data theif).

**You need to check the signal strength of both wifi card & wifi router.

**Try physically moving the router to see if a new position might improve the signal reception.

Hope that helps?

Best Regards IR

Are you using Zonealarm? I used to get this. I'd be using the internet for a while and then I wouldn't be able to access any web pages while everything else (email etc) was fine.

Ended up having to reboot all the time.

I got rid of it and used McAfee.

Maybe its your wireless adapter, try another one tomorrow or read your step by step guide and start again from the beginning turning everything off even at the wall sockets.
