In most states, the compensation for judges is set by the legislature. They have control over judicial salaries.

In my own opinion, in California, judges are not overpaid. They work long hours and put up with a lot of garbage. They make more important decisions in a day than many people make in a year. Almost all are in their position because they have exhibited some excellence in their respective law practices. Many have taken paycuts to go into public service. They are more than deserving of their salaries.

The very idea is absurd. They are, in fact, vastly underpaid.

Judges - even the most senior - are paid less than fourth year associates at large law firms. These individuals, who are often superb lawyers with decades of experience, make tremendous sacrifices to provide a service to the rest of us without which the justice system could not function.

No, they aren't. Quite frankly, most of them work more than 70 hrs a week and it isn't an easy job at all. It is in fact very stressful, especially if the judge is a good one.
