They wear it to show self respect. They want a man to like them for their personality rather than their face and body.

Not all women wear the hajib (that's what it's called.) For example, in Iraq under Hussein, it was uncommon. Some orthodox Muslim women wear them as part of a religious practice that emphasizes modesty. Depending on the sect and how devout the woman is, she may cover more or less. There are actually similar rules for men: they are not supposed to expose their arms or chest, for example. The clothing is actually a really good choice, climate-wise. Large, baggy clothes protect from the sun, and provide good airflow, which helps keep them cool. Clothes like that are actually a much better choice in hot weather than Western-style clothing.

It is not only women in the middle east who cover there heads. I'm a Scottish Muslim and i cover mine. There are Muslim women all over the world who cover there head. We do it for modesty. Our hair is considered part of our beauty and is for our husbands to enjoy only and wear modest clothes for the same reason not to show the world what we have. Its about respecting ourselves, our husbands and our families and of course God. Its really comfy and very cool in hot weather you would be surprised.

Can some of the people above not read? You did ask why they covered there heads? You did not ask why they covered there faces. Face veils are a choice in Islam not a requirement i dont cover my face or my hands and i dont know any Muslim woman who does. Yes there are some and i respect those sisters choices they do it to please Allah nothing else.

JAY below two words for you b*ll .Ok thats one i'm to much of a lady to say the other.

It is the general consensus among the Muslims that a Muslim woman is required to cover her head leaving only her face showing as part of an overall dress code and behaviour which Islam prescribes. It is therefore part of the social system of Islam, and a manifestation of important general Islamic principles. Firstly, an educated Muslim woman does this because she is following guidance from God and His prophet Muhammad recorded in the Qur'an,and in the Sunnah (the knowledge about the practice and example of the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him)).

The women do not need any other reason or excuse other than because Allah has commanded it, and these large baggy clothes hide their shape, and hair fulfilling Allahs commanded Hijab.

Well baggy clothes actually keep you cool.

They cover their heads because hair is "sexy" and women are supposed to sheild themselves from men looking at them. So they cover their pretty hair. That's the same reason they cover their skin with clothes.

They can uncover themselves and wear "normal" clothes when they are just with their family.

The Qur'an requires believers, both male and female, to dress modestly.

"And tell the believing women to lower their gaze and guard their private parts and not to display their adornment except that which ordinarily appears thereof and to draw their headcovers over their chests and not to display their adornment except to their husbands, their fathers, their husbands fathers, their sons." (24:31).
Women must[citation needed] wear hijab. All those in whose presence a woman is not obliged to cover herself are called her mahrams. While in front of other women, she is only obliged to cover from her navel to her knees.

Traditionally, this sura has been interpreted to mean that women should cover all but their face and hands. Men are required only to cover themselves from knee to waist. Some Islamic societies have set even stricter dress codes for women, requiring women to wear chadors or burqas that hide all but the eyes. Some Muslims criticize this as excessive, referring to Qur'anic verses saying that it is wrong to refrain from what is permitted by God according to Qur'an 66:1. This is usually interpreted as applying to asceticism; critics of strict dress codes are applying this to clothing as well.
