Would you want to spend every second of YOUR life training for the toughest sporting event ever? Those people spend 4 years training and that is time consuming enough. Squishing it into 1 year would be impossible.

Tradition. But actually, they mustered that up to. Originally, it was to be every 8 years. But the modern world is all about making money and it's hard to do that once every 8 years.
The whole point is to find the best in the world. You need time to make the best and train the best. If it was every year, you'd end up getting what happens in major league sports. How many world championships have the New York Yankees won? More than any other team right? That's because they had the best players paid off to stay with them for many years making sure they'd win back to back seasons. Enlarge that to a global scale and you'd have the Olympics. That's why it was to be every 8 years, now every 4 years.

To build up the hype for it. If it was every year then it would be pretty boring. By stretching it out to every four years, people get more excited to watch and stuff.... just like the world cup, only difference is that the winter olympics doesnt stop wars like the world cup does.

An Olympiad is a period of four years, associated with the Olympic Games. Today, an Olympiad refers to a period beginning January 1st of a year in which the Games of the Olympiad are due to occur, and lasting four years. The first modern Olympiad began in 1896, so the second began in 1900, and so on. The twenty-ninth will begin in 2008
