I used to be an engineer at a coal fired utility, and I do a lot of hiking and running on terrain.
You can imagine what my socks looked like.
Bleach got them dingy. I tried Oxy-Clean and they were white as new, PLUS it didn't eat away at the fabric.

you the best way I find is the good old fashioned bar soap for washing clothes. soak the soak´s in cold water then give a good rub with the soap . Leave the soak out of the water with the soap still on , this gives the soap a chance to do it´s work about 1/2 or so . Then back to the cold water give a rub add more soap then straight to the washing machine on a normal wash. Hang your soaks and whites outside as the sun will do the rest of the bleaching the natural way & leave your whites whiter than white

I learned a secret that has really worked for me... Bleach actually makes your clothes yellow slowly over time. THat and it weakens the fabric of clothing so that you'll see your whites literally falling apart. A friend taught me that you wear whites and then if there's a stain or something in them, remove the stain immediately and then soak it in a tub of water for a few days. Then drop them in the washer and run the white cycle as usual, using detergent, not bleach. You then hang them dry. If you keep this up, your whites will stay white forever.

Many people bleach their whites weekly but I only use bleach when it's absolutely necessary. I raised three sons who were atheletes, such as yourself. I have always used Tide & made sure I used Final Touch clothes softener as well. Final Touch contains a bluing agent which left their socks nice & white all the time.

Don't use bleach. It causes deterioration of the fabric. What I do is, periodically, put all the dingy whites in the washing machine, in which I have already dissolved some DISHWASHER detergent. Agitate the machine until everything is wet, and turn the machine off. Let them soak for a few hours. Then, add your regular detergent and finish the cycle.

Keep the inside of your shoes clean. That, after a while, messes up your socks as much as walking the streets in your stocking feet(Wearing socks). Change your socks more often, so the dirt doesn't get ground in.

Bleach yellows. A small amount of Ammonia works great, so does oxyclean and the sun.The others gave some really good advice.
