Poppets are not hard to use. However you should have a background in magic in order to properly prepare and use a poppet.
Most poppets are made from fabric. You sew up 3/4 of the poppet then stuff it with herbs, roots, or stones that are appropriate for the intent. Before you sew it up make sure something personal from the person the poppet is intended for is in the doll. It can be hair, nail clippings, cloth from clothes, brush, etc. If you do not have something personal you can put in a picture or simply write the person's name on a piece of paper and put it in there.
Once all the items are in the poppet you sew it up and take out your candle (s), oils, etc. that you use to work your magic(again appropriate to the intent). You light the candle, annoint the poppet with the oil, state out loud what it is being used for and visualize that happening. Hold the visualization for as long as possible. Sit the poppet by the candle and allow the candle to burn down. Store it in the appropraite place until the intent comes to fruiation. You can then discard it or keep it to recharge the energy every so often.
I have found they work best when done on yourself or with permission from the intended person. And of course healing rituals are the easiest and best thing to use a poppets for. If you have chronic pain, let's say in your back, you can actually put a pin in the back. The pin (appropriate color of course) will overtime draw out the pain. This the reason people saw pins in dolls. It was for pain relieve not cause.
Your best bet is to learn about folk magic and hoodoo, which is african american folk magic. Poppet are used in this type of magic all the time. It is called sympathetic magic. For the record the voodoo doll has nothing to do with Vodou the religion.
If you are serious about learning then check out www.luckymojo.com. There is information on the practice of hoodoo and a correspondence course of learning and working is offered through the site. I have read the book (not taken the course) and it is well worth it. One day I will take the class.

vodoo dolls are fake, spells are real but dolls are not. When you cast a spell, you use ingredients like hair , herbs , incense , stuff like that , then u call upon the gods/ess but when you use a voodoo doll , you dont use anything but pins and needles and using hair or personal stuff alone wont work, a spell is stronger than a doll

To "activate" a vodoo doll, or any poppet for that matter, you need something personal from the person. A bit of hair, fingernail clippings, dirty sock, underwear etc...The more personal effects you have of theirs the more powerfully linked the poppet will be to them. It is your Will and intent that will drive the activation, and the effectiveness of the spell.
