It could be as simple as 'opposites attract'. On the other hand, it could also be as complex as suggesting that what excites us is the unknown, the forbidden, the unacceptable, or that which may never ever be.
We are all drawn to the field on the other side of the fence, knowing the grass is always greener there. And, by going out with someone who is different it allows us to have some sort of identification. People see us. People notice us. People watch and wonder and consider us. And as they say, in Hollywood there is no such thing as bad publicity.

I think it has something to do with rap music.
No seriously, personality is the easiest thing to fall in love with. And rap music creates an idea of the "typical" personality of a black man, one that reinforces a sense of danger, power, suave, etc.
