I have a year old HP pavilion desktop computer that has had no problems till now. I restarted it and it would not load .. saying "disk boot failure, insert system disk and press enter" You hit enter it doesn't do anything. Also, the screen is now shaking (since this problem started) It even shakes in the BIOS settings. I have swapped several things to see if each were the cause: the monitor, power supply, and hard drive. It is definitely not any of these things. When I pop in the recovery cd it says 'no hard drive found. Pc recovery can not be continued. Press any key to continue" Now the monitor almost seems to be getting worse as it will dim out and almost get a rainbow effect on it before it brightens back up.. continuously shaking. Sometimes when restarting and attempting to power the computer on.. the monitor wont even come on and the computer never quiets down. I can tell right away that it wont power and sometimes takes several restarts before it will.

Im not sure if any of this matter but under bios settings it looked different and im not sure if it is:
first channel device 0 - NONE
firs channel device 1 -NONE
second channel device 0- NEC-DVD-RW-ND
second channel device1 -NEC-DVD-RW-ND

Other notes: There is no floppy drive for this computer, it did not come with a xp cd, and its no longer under warranty (JUST over a year .. pout)

Any and all suggestion would be welcome

My video card is part of my mother board. Again,... it can't be the hard drive as i put it in another computer.. and everything worked fine.. Same with the monitor and power supply.

Two different problems here...

the first problem is your hard drive or the first channel on your IDE controller has failed (most likely the hard drive itself). Without the hard drive, the computer can see nothing to boot from, and your recovery CD won't be able to install the software anywhere. It is not your IDE controller itself or your CD drive would not function.

the second problem sounds like your video card/interface. If it is integrated, it would require a new motherboard, or you could add a video card (probably PCI) if you have a slot available.

Best of luck!

Hmm..I would of suspected the hard drive. But since the screen shapes I'd suggest either mobo or video card. When the monitor doesn't show anything does everything else work as normally? Keep your eyes on the Hard Drive LED on your computer which blinks when the hard drive is active.

From the symptoms it seems to be motherboard or video card that could be causing this problem. If you have any friends who are on your same pc technology (AGP or PCI EXPRESS)...Try borrowing their graphics card and replace yours for a test. If it boots up and works fine then it's your graphics card. If not then it's the motherboard most likely.

You've swapped and tested the monitor, power supply, and hard drive so that should be fine. If the motherboard can't locate the hard disk then it's more likely a motherboard beginning to die out...since a graphics card wouldn't effect that at all. But best to be safe to test with a different graphics card before you buy anything. But atm it's almost 100% the mobo.

Sounds like to clear problems:
1) Monitor problem, nothing to do with computer.
2) BIOS problem.

Try a different monitor.
Can you go into the BIOS? Can you access the details for the hard disk? If yes, then the computer is fine, and the disk might have gone bad.

either your harddrive died, or somehow it was forgotten by the BIOS, you can auto detect harddrives in the BIOS, look around on the first screen when you enter the BIOS setup for the auto detect.
you actually posted good information, it clearly shows that as far as your motherboard is concerned, there is no HD attached, the question becomes why ?
possible answers:

The drive did actually die.
Somehow the BIOS was changed to think you don't have one.
your battery on the motherboard is now so weak that its losing information, get a new one.

You did not say that you tried a different video card, my guess is that your video card has gone bad, borrow one from a friend for a test to see if theirs works in your computer.

the chances of both the hard drive failure and graphics failure at same time would be and is very rare unless it is being caused by the mobo which shouldn't be too expensive to replace by someone you know who knows about computers(i would do it for you but i'm busy with my own systems and repairs for friends and family as well as being a house husband looking after two kids(soon to be three)) or it may be your PSU failing , but without looking at it , it is hard to diagnose fully.

now you have mentioned intergrated graphics, i would ALMOST definately put my money on it being a motherboard issue.
