to lull our little ones to sleep when the song is about putting your baby in a tree and letting the wind crash the cradle to the ground?

Its just a traditional lullaby whose words are easily remembered by mum or dad It has a soothing melody which is all the baby can hear. The baby can't understand the words can they. You can Chan.ge the words if you like How about --- Hush a bye baby in a pink cot when you are here we love you a lot when were away we worry and pray That our baby's OK for each night and day.

Ive always wondered that. My family always used to sing a northern song called "cats got the measles".
It goes,
"Cats got the measles,
the chicken pox,
the belly ache,
Corn on his big toe,
And a pimple on his bum"

Listened to my cousin sing it to my baby second cousin the other day, and realised its not the words you sing, its the way you sing it. Because trust me, how on earth would THAT be comforting as a child if you understood the words?! :-)o

I've often thought the same thing, the tune is lovely but the words are without a doubt bizare! I tried to steer clear of singing this one to my little ones i used to hum the tune but the words put me off doing that aswell!!

I KNOW! I was singing it to my little one and thought 'what the bloody hell am I doing, she's going to have nightmares!'
It's not till you listen to the words that you realise how wrong it is!

I agree with you. I choose not to sing that one to my son as it was a bit morbid. i sang 'Hush Little Baby' (or Mocking Bird as it is also know as) it seemed a bit nicer!

I think it's because it calms and soothes the young new born. I am not sure, but I think they like hearing soft voices. By the way, let your baby listen to classical music, they say it helps them become smarter when they are older. I am not sure if it works though, so you make the choice, you're the mother :-)

I have often wondered this.

It's barbaric!

Mind you kids like gruesome things....maybe they start young. Just wait till they're pulling the legs off spiders and then try to feel sorry for them....!
