The letter "C" and the alpahabet use is a simple naming convention. A and B were typically your floppy disks. C being your hard disk drive. D being your CDROM drive. The C drive can actually be just about any drive letter, but it's better to keep it C. The C drive will in most cases house your operating system and windows core files, and most programs will install default to the C drive. You can specify another drive if you have another drive in your computer.

Drive "C" usually refers to the principal internal hard drive. A floppy drive is commonly Drive "A" while a CD Drive is usually Drive "D". If anybody knows why there is no Drive "B" some of us would love to know

the C: drive is usually the boot drive in a computer (although this is not necessary).

Usually A: and B: are reseved for floppy drives, so C: is usually your first hard drive or hard drive partition.
