The Cavalier is not a bad car for a starter. Ask the seller if he has maintenance records for the car and if he will allow you to take it to a technician for inspection. Check on carfax to make sure it has not been totaled/in a serious accident or have a salvage title on it. Check under the hood for problems with oil leaks and belts, brake shoes and pads, look down the line of the car side to see if anything looks strange. also if i am looking for a used car.. i will take a magnet that has been wrapped in tape. i will stick the magnet to several locations of the side of the car to see if any body filler has been used. if body filler has been applied to the side, the magnet will not stick so strong as it would to other places. keep in mind that some cars there are plastic body panels...happy driving

i drive one and i havnt had any mechanical problems with it what so ever. they are great first cars and great on insurance even if it is a convertable because its not under the sports car catagory like most other convertables. but before buying any used car id def run a carfax report just incase it has been in an accident because even a small collision can alture the body causing wear on parts of the vehicle that will have to be replaced after time.

I had a 93 cavalier rs. It was a pretty good car. In 150,000 miles it has needed a water pump, radiator, heater core and fuel pump. It still runs great & gets gas mileage in the low 30's.

They aren't bad cars. Don't do a Convertable because your insurance will be outrageous.

I drive one and I like it. Mine is a 2002 though, so I am not sure about the older ones.
