Try the Fat Cat! I've been there. Pretty informal place. The room where the guys play is behind the bar. There are a bunch of couches in there and they have jam sessions every night until like 4am. It's a nice place to hang out and catch some good jazz.

I've been to most of the jazz clubs in NYC, often.

For a one time visit to NYC, I strongly suggest The Village Vanguard. There is no other place with the cultural vibe that the vanguard has. It is a huge part of jazz history, and you can FEEL it when you are there. It's a pretty small basement club, with black and white photos of the past masters on the wall. ALL the masters have played there, and the ones that are still alive still do play there.

It's true that there are other great clubs, such as Fat Cat and The Jazz Gallery. These clubs usually have younger and sometimes very amazing musicians. I have seen some of the best shows in my life at the Jazz Gallery. If you have a chance to come back to NYC, you should check them out. However, The Vanguard is what those clubs are becoming.

Well since NYC is so diverse, it more or less boils down what type cuisine you're into.
