I've always preferred Clint to the Duke. The Searchers is an amazing film. However, Unforgiven, The Good, the Bad and the Ugly, The Outlaw Josey Wales and High Plains Drifter are the films I'll watch over and over again.
The best Western? Probably Once Upon a Time in the West.
The Western is often considered to be the one truly American film genre and for that reason I doubt we've seen the last of it. Like many genres it's popularity is cyclical. Thanks to Deadwood it's still very much in the public consciousness.
Anyway, I'd rather have one great Western TV series like Deadwood than a dozen awful films.

those were different times
John Wayne is an era in westerns.
Clint Eastwood is just a person who was in some good westerns.
I don't compare the two.
When wayne was acting the meanest you could get was The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance.
Eastwood started with The Good The Bad and The Ugly.
Now he has Unforgiven and the advantage of all the loyalty John Wayne built for the genre.
I would call it a draw.

The Duke has done some of the best
But Clint for me did a good cowboy film in Unforgiven.

My father would say Clint, my grandfather would say John.
It's a tough choice. It think prefer Clint's Westerns just because I think they have a better sense of realism. The John Wayne bravado was to be expected, but it can be a bit mysogynistic.
I would suggest you watch a movie called The Proposition. It's a pretty good modern "Western" that's set in Austrailia.

The sons of Katie Elder,
Some of the content just cracks me up.
Love Clint, but have to say that one has John pipping at the post for me.
I don't know why, maybe we should all storm Hollywood and demand more.
Oh, The Three Amego's was Quite funny

That all depends on what generation you ask . For me its Clint Eastwood .
Hollywood runs in cycles so just give it a little time , westerns will make a return .

Silly boy. No one ever out did the Duke when it came to a western. He was the top dog and have failed to see any that could compare to him.
There have been a number of decent westerns but, again nothing great.
