Yes, Iraq is a big threat to the US, because they think we are a great threat to them. Circular logic I know, but it is true the US has never felt that Iran was a major threat only the terrorists that it supports.
After WW2 the world was divided unevenly. Britain, France, and the US planned on making their control temporary, but the Soviets refused to let go of their areas, and the Chinese had turned to Mao for leadership so they were communist; and so started the Cold War.
The US Allies and the Communists knew that in a direct war the risk of nuclear bombs flying through the air would leave every one a loser. So they began proxy fighting; which was the reason behind the Korean and Vietnamese Wars. As part of that proxy war the Soviets started to supply important oil rich countries like Iraq, Saudi Arabia, Syria and other nations, like Egypt, with military arms and support. To avoid letting the Soviets taking over the Middle East the US started to support the few allies we had in the area.
Israel was (and is) a great ally, but they are hated across the region. They are also great customers for US arms and equipment. So the US has continued to support them, but they try to do it in a way that won’t offend the rest of the world, not very successfully though.
The other allies we had in the region were Turkey and Iran. The Shaw of Iran was a brutal dictator, like Sadam was. He had to be to prevent the religious civil war from breaking out, we see what has happened in Iraq and now we know why both dictators were so harsh. Iran was a great customer for the US’s military arms and equipment and we needed them to help us stop Soviet aggression. So the US overlooked the human rights abuses that the Shaw performed. However, the Iranian People could not overlook that abuse and when the Shaw brought out US equipment to use against his own people it didn’t take a genius to make the connection.
The in the late 1970s the Shaw got sick and he fled Iran with his family, leaving no government to take over. There was a revolt and the religious war started to flair up. The only person who could stop the war and heal the country was a religious ruler. The Iranians looked o the Ayatollah Khomeini who was exiled in France. He returned to the country and the Iranians concentrated on their most hated enemy. The one who had supported the Shaw, had helped to oppress the people, and who had stuck a Hebrew enemy right on their borders; the US. This is why they hate the US.
Now days the Iranians have their own Manifest Destiny to reunite the largest nation before the Roman Empire; the Persian Empire. They see the US as the major stumbling block to this dream. The Iranians also see the US controlling the strings of Israel, and they feel that we are their mortal enemy. This is why they consider us such a threat.
When Moslem Extremists started shooting rockets into Israel, back in the 1980s the UN decided to send in Peace Keepers, lead by the US. Iran’s response was to form Hezbollah and one of their first acts was to sabotage the US peace keeping force, by sending a truck bomb into the Marine Barracks killing most of the Marines. The UN and the US backed off so Israel had to invade to stop the rocket attacks which lead to an almost 10 year war. Syria wants to annex Lebanon so they have been trying to undermine their government for a generation. They also have a nasty habit of assassinating any Lebanese leader who might be able to pull the country together. This power vacuum only let Hezbollah become stronger and able to control most of the south.
The rocket attacks by Hezbollah into Israel in the summer of 2006 was another proxy war. Iran was using Hezbollah to attack Israel so they could damage Israel and the US. This was just a continuation of the attacks that started back in the 1970s when the Iranian “students” took over the American Embassy and held its occupants as hostages. All of their actions since that point have been to destroy Israel and to attack the US.
Iran has an entire battalion (several hundred) of young men who have vowed to become suicide bombers and suicide warriors in case of an attack on Iran, which in the Iranian eyes started with the creation of Israel and the US support of the Shaw of Iran. The Iranians don’t just hate the US they hate the US with a fanatical fiery passion! They have been support or supplying all the terrorists they can. Currently they are supplying most of the insurgents and a lot of the equipment they use. When the US Army up-armored its HUMVEEs then the roadside bombs didn’t work very well. Iran answered that by providing a better grade of explosives. When that wasn’t enough then they started supplying the insurgents with artillery shells strong enough to penetrate a tank’s armor.
Now Iran is working on developing a nuclear bomb. They are committed to it no matter what and they have the facilities to do it. No one can bomb the plant out of existence because Israel already did that with the first bomb factory. Now the Iranians have built one so deep underground that it will probably take a nuclear bomb to destroy it.
It is only a matter of time before Iran gets the nuclear bomb, and just as they have done in the past, they will not use it in a direct attack. Instead they will “sell” their nukes to groups like Hezbollah who WILL use those nukes. They are probably drawing up plans right now. There major goal will be to hit the US because if they nuke Israel then the all will have to breathe the radioactive pollution. it is only a matter of a few years, maybe up to 10 before the Iranians supply a nuclear bomb that someone will try to smuggle into the US for detonation.
THIS is why Iran is a deadly enemy, the problem is that few Americans consider them to be much or a threat and they don’t understand why the Iranians hate the US so much.
Once Israel and the US are knocked down a few pegs then Iran will try to retake most of the Middle East to reform the Persian Empire.

There isn't any query that Saddam Hussein used to be a chance to the US...if no longer instant...then obviously ultimately. Your facets are legitimate. I consider that the quandary lies in the truth that America used to be misled - deliberately - through their chief whilst invading Iraq. Bush might most of the time have had the country at the back of him in his intentions if he'd been honest...however he wasn't. Another key aspect to maintain in brain used to be the truth that oil from Iraq used to be because of be traded in Euros, as an alternative than US bucks within the very close long term...this might have all however locked the US out. And there has continuously been a significant problem within the whitehouse...in the course of the administrations seeing that WWII...that China had intentions of having oil from the center east. This has been some of the finest threats to the US. All of that during brain, the US did what it suggestion used to be correct through invading Iraq and putting off Saddam. But the way in which that it used to be performed used to be the quandary for me...and plenty of Americans. Not a well feeling to be duped through your president.

Yes. A successful and independent Iraq would threaten the US strategic control of the Middle East. It keeps the exchange of oil in dollars instead of Euros. We know that Saddam would have converted to Euros.
Now, thanks to the "war", the right people and corporations can make big bucks at the expense of the American people. All you really need to do is to stage a demolition of three buildings in NYC and everyone will back the invasion of two countries or more.
The CIA and US military can make sure there are no major challenges to US dominance of the global economy.

No they aren't.
That was the excuse Bush and his administration used in 2003 before invading Iraq. That clearly wasn't the case. No WMDs were found and no connection was found between Iraq and 9/11, although Dick Cheney wants us to believe otherwise.
