I wasn't born in Macon, but I live in Macon Georgia. Looks like it was a hit by Stonewall Jackson and written by J. babcock. Grateful dead, not greatful.

Also, it appears Elvis sang this, apparent from poor grammar, I assume this is the closest he ever came to Macon.

Macon is a fair-size city but still steeped in the long ago problems that have plagued the south. There is no solution in site at the moment.

The only differences between now and 1940 are the street cars don't run anymore, some of the old, ante-bellem mansions are gone, the women don't wear hoop skirts and the cherry trees never bloom in time with the Cherry Blossom Festival which the city fathers have no idea how to manage and hire outsiders to manage it. Plus, a lot of the magnolia trees have been cut down.

The mayor has a "love child," his furniture was confiscated by the Bibb county sheriff's department for non-payment and all of the city is divided. He also spent thousands of dollars on funds from the Homeland Security Act for a dinner for his friends; that's going to really keep us safe!

He has brought nothing but scandal to the city and intent on creating a generic town by removing any historical remnants to the past, good or bad.

Given the facts, no one would admit being born in this town, today. If you don't believe what I've written, look it up online. This is only the tip of the iceberg. Do I smell a movie in the making or just the rotting corspe of what is left of the heart of our poor, dying city? The facts speak for themselves.

I Washed my Hands in Muddy Water by Joe Babcock

---I was born in Macon Georgia
They kept my daddy over in Macon jail
He told me if you keep your hands clean
You won't hear them bloodhounds on your trail

Well I fell in with bad companions
Robbed a man, oh up in Tennessee
They caught me way up in Nashville
They locked me up and threw away the key
What'd you do son

* I washed my hands in muddy water
Washed my hands, oh but they didn't come clean
Tried to do what my daddy told me
But I must have washed my hands in a muddy stream

Well I asked the judge now when's my time up
He said son, oh you know we won't forget
If you try just to keep your hands clean
We might just make a good man of you yet

Oh I couldn't wait to get my time up
I broke out, broke out of Nashville jail
I just crossed the state-line of Georgia
Well I can hear them bloodhounds on my trail
What'd you do son

** I washed my hands in muddy water
Washed my hands, oh but they didn't come clean
Tried to do, (tried to do) like my daddy told me
But I must have washed my hands in a muddy stream

** Repeat

* Repeat

* Repeat
Yeh
I washed my hands in muddy water
Washed my hands, oh but they didn't come clean
Tried to do, (tried to do) like my daddy told me
