it takes anywhere from 6 - 7 hours barring any traffic in Santa Barbara and San Jose.

It is definately more scenic the I-5. But is longer. If you have the time I would recommend doing it over a couple days and making some stops in places like Santa Barbara, San Luis Obispo, monterey. It is a wonderful new up and coming wine area and scenary that is just gorgeous.

It depends on traffic. It' s taken my 9 hours to get from Santa Cruz to Long Beach on that route, and that city is 1 1/2 hrs south of San Fran!

It depends on how enchanted you get on that route...it is beautiful up that way. I never can make it all the way in one day. However, my friends, who go regularly can get there in 7 1/2 hours with hardly any stopping. Personally, I hate to travel that way...

don't take 101. take route 5 instead it's faster. if you really want to take the scenic route, take route 1 (pacific coast highway). it'll take the whole day at least, but you can't beat the scenery...
