The love story about Jack and Rose is just something to keep the audiences attention while watching the story about the fateful ship. It's not real. BUT there was a J. Dawson on the Titanic. I saw the headstone in the Titanic cemetary in Halifax NS. A little useless trivia I thought you'd might find interesting.

Everyone on that fate full boat would of had a love story to tell.
But Jack and Rose are fictitious.
But there were a few notable characters on the boat who were really there, such as Molly Brown, they ended up nicknaming her The Unsinkable Molly Brown. The story surrounding the boat was true to some extent as well, such as the captains story, and the guy who made the boat, the band playing etc...

The unsinkable Molly Brown is real and there are some wonderful Books about her as well as a Broadway musical.

I checked my Titanic book and the feature characters in the movie didn't show up on the passenger list.

No, there is no proof that this love story every happened, or that Leo DiCaprio's character ever existed. I think the "making-of" documentary even said that Kate's character Rose was never even on the ship. But everyone else was based on real people.

Pure Hollywood.

They got the separation by class down right though.

The mingling, however, is off the charts.
