Confederates were citizens of the Confederacy, an organization of states in the South that seceded from the Union in 1861 under the belief that states were sovereign and had the right to do that.
Whether they were right or wrong, they're all dead now anyway, so none of them really believe anything anymore, and it no longer really matters what they believed then.
Get a sense of time in reference to History. If something happened a hundred years ago, it's a good bet everyone in on it is dead now.
