I think you would enjoy The Power of One. It was published in the early 1990's, but I hadn't read it until last year. It is about a young boy growing up and trying to make sense of the world. There is also a movie--but it is not nearly as exceptional as the book. Oh, another reason I had passed over the book several times in the last decade was because it has boxing in it, but that might be an attraction for a younger reader.

The Salmon of Doubt.
After Douglas Adams' untimely demise, his editor looked at EVERY unfinished written work he had on his many computers and compiled them into his final book. There is not story to the book. Mostly a bunch of interesting little musings about Life, The Universe, and Everything, and a few unfinished story ideas that never made it. Quite an interesting read, if I do say so.
