i could probably stretch to £400 if i had to but i'd rather not. ideally i'd like to be able to watch dvd's on it, and a 25GB plus hard drive would be nice too! not asking for much...
any recommendations would be appreciated.

I wouldn't recommend emachines. They are not well built computers.

I've been working with computers for 12 years now...Start since I was 12. If your looking for a decent laptop I'd recommend Dell. They have positively the best Brand named computers out their (with the exception of top named enthusiast brands). You can get a pretty good laptop for around 5-800 US. so since your looking for 400 pounds should come out to around 780 US or so. Whatever happens make sure you nab a Intel Core 2 processor. I don't remember the exact name for the laptop versions but try to stay away from pentium 4 and celeron based processors.

The laptop Core processors from intel perform extremely well. They'd be great for your laptop since they have a low power draw. Which means the battery would last longer and you'd have more time to watch dvd's as well. They also outperform their predecessors as well.

Try to stay away from emachines as much as possible. HP is decent but dell is the way to go. If you come across any other brand such as toshiba...sony...Or anything along those lines it'd be ok if they offer more for the money. But if I ever had to go brand name I'd get a dell.

Hi, please don't buy a laptop off ebay unless its in your home town and you can go see it first and try it. I often wonder how many demo laptops that have been on for up to hours a day for weeks end up on ebay as new items.

Have a look at www.ebuyer.co.uk They have an excellent next day delivery service.

I have an Acer 3692 with an excellent spec include graphics that will run aeros from vista premium. Not all laptops will. Mine was £400 from Comet.

Don't buy packard bell or adent. Look at the hp one below. Guy at work got one of these from ebuyer and he's very pleased with it.

Get Inspiron 6400. The others aren't as good.

If you want a larger hard drive, get an extrenal one for about 100 pounds for 400GB.
PC World have Amazon.co.uk have good deals (although Amazon's hard drives are often limited in availability).

Good luck.

PS. Dell is the best place to buy laptops. You can't get better deals for new laptops anywhere else.

You can get a great one on ebay, or if you do not use ebay then go to an electronic store like Best Buy American and those kinds and buy something like an emachines or Dell or HP, some of them are less than $400.00
