I've tried to play several ps2 titles on the ps3 and none of them will work. I tried resident evil 4 and metal gear solid 3 which are relatively recent titles. The ps3 told me that these games will not work. The ps3 website confirms that these titles will play on the ps3. How is this? I bought the ps3 in Europe, today.

Update your ps3. The UK version needs the update. Goto the UK.playstation.com site though don't update on the U.S.

It's been quite heavily featured this. Apparently, the majority of PS2 games are not backwards compatible with the PS3.
It isn't your console that's the problem (in a sense) but the fact that Sony just haven't made the European version BC. as they have in America. Nothing you can do about it sadly (yet?)

the European PS3 will only play blu-ray disks hence why all PS3 games are blu-ray formated.
