There's no problem with this. My daughter is currently in France, with a passport that has only one month left on it.

My initial answer was: It's probably fine. He just needs to make sure he's back on a plane to home within 3 months--88 days to be extra sure.
But, I did a little digging at "us.gov", the official US gov't. website and clicked on the passport info. which stated this on one of its pages:
"If possible, you should renew your passport approximately nine (9) months before it expires. Some countries require that your passport be valid at least six (6) months beyond the dates of your trip. Some airlines will not allow you to board if this requirement is not met."
With the trip coming up so fast, you probably should call the airline AND the consulate of the country the kid's visiting to find out if he can board/will be allowed in.

hi there crazygingerchick, it should be ok to go to France because your son's passport is still valid and hasn't run out. However, some countries do prefer that passports have at least 6months left on them.
Telephone the uk passports information line to find out for sure, it is availabe 24 hours: 0871 918 9075. :o)

If he is a EU citizen, he can travel anywhere in the EU so long as his passport has not expired. If he is not an EU citizen then you need to need to check with the nearest French embassy to confirm whether they require 3 months or 6 months for your nationality.

If his passport has less than three months on it the passport control officer may ask to see his return ticket but that should be it.
