There are many toys and games that can entertain both you and your rats. Since rats combine the antics of three year children, dogs, cats, monkeys, and rodents, we can cross the board as to what kinds of things we can teach our rats to enjoy.
Some of the things that my rats, and other people's rats have enjoyed are the following:
wadded up paper balls
paper towel rolls
popcicle sticks
straws
empty tissue boxes
full boxes of tissue
cardboard box full of discarded material
craft wooden numbers and letters
ribbons and string from presents
meat bones
empty boxes
you as their private jungle gym
fruit tree branches (only if you know they haven't been sprayed with pesticide/herbicide)
Wrestling them with your hand
rodent chews and treats
Dog toys
Cat toys
Bird toys
whole coconut
whole nuts in the shell
ping pong balls
tennis balls
clothes pegs
plastic or real shells
Throw a towel or blanket on the floor that they can tunnel under. Just watch where you're walking around them.
rope tied between two table legs
climbing up a rope
bird ladders (tip the ladder end over end as the rat races over it)
children's blocks
playhouses
toy cars, boats, trucks
stuffed toys from garage sells
floaties on the water
PCV pipe
Pea-diving (fill a new paint tray with water and toss in a bunch of frozen peas)
Hide food around the room for them to find
Crack the shell of hard boiled eggs and let the rats get into it
Pillow toss (gently toss the rat onto a soft pillow. They usually run back to your hands for more)

A lot people like to use wheels for rats, but if the rats don't use the wheel, or that clear ball, for it's intended purpose, it makes an awesome toilet or sleeping compartment.

I found a really good rat website. It has games to play with your rats, things you can make for your rats, rat quizes and a whole lot more!
It's based in Australia, but there's a lot of information on it!

My rats' favorite game was to chase things - they both liked chasing string, and I also had a fluffy feather they liked to try and grab - they actually reminded me a lot of cats while they were doing that.
Also, one game I found out about by accident: While I had my rats out on my bed, I often tried to do my homework, too, usually with my papers and pens and things on the bed so that I could keep an eye on them while I worked. My rat Harley got in the habit of running up to me, grabbing my pen away from me, and running off with it, like a dog with a stick in her mouth. I thought it was a bit annoying, so I would grab the pen back and try to work again, except she'd run back and do the whole thing over again. So, I turned it into a game, kind of like backwards fetch.

Make obstacle courses for them. Depending on the rat, they may or may not take to it. I've always enjoyed making mansions for them out of cardboard boxes with little rooms and areas they can hide in. The thing rats like most though, is to just free-roam. If you have a ratproof room in your house (I've always used my bathroom) they'd love to explore. There aren't any real "games", I guess, just cause rats are too stupid to catch on to most stuff.

aw.. my bf's mom used to have many rats as pets. they are so cute. i dont remember them playing a lot. they loved to all climb on her shoulders and just sit there and rest. it was the cutest thing. maybe you should just cuddle w/ him (or her..)!!
knowing me though, i would probably make elaborate mazes and put cheese in the middle to see how smart i could make my rat lol
**oh yeah, and i also think they sell RAT LEASHES which is soo funny; how cute would that be to see someone walking their little pet rat down the sidewalk!! Maybe get your rat a leash and let him explore the outdoors and go for walks now that its getting nice out!!(well, it is here at least)

Curtains to climb, basin of water for swimming, ping-pong ball footie, obstacle courses around the house, peeka-boo up your jumper or trouser leg, ropes to climb (including swings), hide objects for them to find, tugging and pulling...well, you get the idea, anything you can come up with is fair game. I tried all these things with my rats, I just never insisted on anything that never appealed or frightened them.

My kids play tag with their pet rats. They put them on the floor, and they name one to be "it". Then, if he touches either one of them or their other rat, they become "it". The rats also love new boxes to chew on.
