When I graduated college, a lot of my friends discouraged me from going into sales because they told me that I should go find a "real job". Up until this day, a lot of people that I know still hold the same perspective - that sales is not considered a serious and a good career choice. Why is that?

It may go back to a very old saying. "Those that can do, those that can't teach and those that cant teach sell". I remember my father telling me that over 40 years ago.

The funny thing is that I had a "real job" for 25-years doing construction management and then got into sales. Ever since I have made more money than I ever did at a "real job". And an having a whole lot more fun doing it.

Sales is a great career - that is, if you believe that what you're selling is a worthy product that people will truly benefit from having. Sales people can and often make more than "highly respected" professionals. I think that most people look down their noses at sales people becaue so many of them don't believe in what they are selling - it's just a job. If a person doesn't believe in their product, they have to become a shrewd, calculating person to make any money with their product. A snake. When you endorse your product with a true heart, then you can skip all the bulls**t and people buy because they believe in you, and they tell their friends, and you get references, and selling is easy because you and your product are the real deal. That's what you're aiming for if your career in sales is not just a job but rather part of your life and something truly worthwhile. Which is the only way to work in sales and not sell your soul. Sales people with the motive to make others lives better also have to be good with people, which is a craft. To understand others (which requires loss of self-absorption) and to resonate with them is a talent that deserves PROPS!! Loud and proud!!

Sales is more of a career path for people with strong interpersonal skills. Their income is based on a combination of how much they can charm a customer and how lucky they are at finding someone who wants what they are offering and is susceptible to that charm. A sales person for technical products often can not deal with the customers' inquiries about technical features and will often make up answers or claim features that the product has never had. That doesn't do the sales reputation much good.

If you are a sales person you will never get an opportunity to create anything, only to get customers to buy what more creative people have thought up. If you are happy with that you can do well financially in the sales field.

Sales pays on commission and thus gives a higher pay rating than people who just grind all day away in the salt mines. Chances are you'll be making more money than them. They don't like this idea, thus they discourage you. Do what you feel happiest doing and leave the opinions of the rest to the rest. Follow your bliss and the world will open doors for you where once were only walls.
