you need to isolate the variable, so for 2x+3=12, you need to move the 3 over to the other side, so you get 2x=9, x=4.5
for 6y-5=11, add 5 to both sides, 6y=16, y = 2 and two thirds
for -1/8+7=16, take away 7 so -1/8d=9, figure the out the rest

this is the only one you're getting...these are too easy to be asking for help. get the variable (the letter) by itself. as long as you do the same thing on both sides of the equals sign (starting with the + and -), you are following the rules.

2X + 3 = 12 (need to get X by itself)
subtract 3 from both sides of the = sign
2X + 3 - 3 = 12 - 3
2X = 9 (because 3 minus 3 is 0 and 12 - 3 is 9)
divide both sides by 2
2X / 2 = 9 / 2
X = 9/2 (because 2/2 equals 1 (1X is just X)
X = 4.5 (9/2 equals 4.5)
