I am drunk, partly high, unstable and irrational. Is this a good mix, good enough to be an artist?

Not that I am, but people seem to think that this makes a good artist, or at least an original artist.

Everyone is an artist in their own way. However, don't for one minute think that being drunk, stoned, and having a poor mental health have anything to do with being an artist. What makes a good artist is knowing where your strengths in art are, whether it be paint, draw, music, or tag [not that tagging is legal, but whatever]. The general public for some dumb reason think that to be completely out there and "original" and "more creative", you have to be some sort of intoxicated. Be it alcohol, drugs or unstable mental health. Go against the general public, dude. Or, if you take the general public's take on art, then go kill yourself. If you don't, the drugs will.

Ok, this is a funny question, but I'll answer seriously because it does touch on the inanity of image.

... that mix is not good for anything. To be an artist: create art. It's that simple. If one is an artist, one cannot keep from creating, and the trappings of "being an artist" should be of no value. There are those who feel that they need to be high or drunk in order to create, and there are those who feel that marginal personalities are the only ones who can create original works... that's bullshit. Simply put: total bullshit.

My feeling is that this particular mindset arises from those who are in love with the idea of being an artist, or rather, their conception of what that means, rather than being invested in the process of actual creation. Art doesn't come dressed in any particular clothes ... isn't created by any particular personality type, doesn't arise from any addiction, etc. ; it comes from all quarters.

Many original and vital artists have suffered from addiction, mental and emotional issues, poor behavior, but they succeeded despite those things, not because of them.
